Zero waste babies

27th July 2022

There has never been a more important time to step up and embrace a more mindful way in how we choose to consume. And just because our tiniest family members have the smallest feet, doesn’t mean their environmental footprint matches their shoe size.

According to the Guardian, each baby’s carbon impact is approximately 58.6 tons of carbon each year. However, the good news is that this is actually relatively easy to reduce and your bank balance will also reap the rewards along with our planet. Here are 5 ways to embrace an almost zero waste life with our little ones and save some money along the way:

  1. Embrace Preloved – there is no doubt you are going to need a few essentials when it comes to having a baby, but because they grow so quickly and their use or need is often so short lived, there is an incredible range of high quality barely used baby items that you can purchase. Markot has everything that you need, including a wide range of premium preloved baby items, all within the one app.
  2. Support Forward Thinking Businesses – brands that create high quality goods is essential as the longevity benefits will organically support reducing our consumption and reduce the damage to our planet. But also supporting brands that use recycled materials, eco friendly ingredients and brands that sell replacement parts to help your purchases last longer, (than having to replace the whole item) sends an important message for other brands to jump on this long-term life attitude and action.
  3. Reduce Where You Can – the thought of reusable nappies and wipes can make even the most organised parent nervous. However even if you can use reusable nappies and wipes at home and save the disposable ones for naps, when you are out and about and of course bedtime, your grocery budget, garbage bins and carbon impact will shrink. So don’t try and do it all, small little changes in your habits really help. Just like financial savings all add up, so do your environmental savings.
  4. Community Love – it takes a village to raise a child, but also that same community can collaboratively help provide for each child and a healthier planet. Sharing, swapping, passing around those items within your own community of family and friends helps support people emotionally, environmentally as well as financially. Clothes, toys, furniture, baby carriers – everything has a use and a benefit to someone.
  5. Food – if you don’t have a dog to catch the bits, you may be creating more waste than you realise. When your little one is ready for solids, serve food in small batches, try sticking to homemade meals rather than plastic wrapped ones and remember that your freezer is a time capsule. Freezing food in ice cubes is a quick and efficient way to use only what you need. And a quality blender will save you so much time for when your baby is ready to eat the same ingredients that the rest of the family are eating.

As you can see, embracing a zero waste life is more approachable than you think, but it starts with being more conscious and respectful of our planet for our children’s safety and enjoyment. Leaning in slowly and steadily when you can and never forget the importance of leading by example if we want long lasting change where the word pollution or climate change doesn’t even have a listing in a dictionary anymore.
