Budgeting for your nursery

One of my favourite parts of being pregnant was creating a new safe space for my baby to sleep. Thinking about the essentials – the bassinet, the cot, the nursing chair, the change table but then the aesthetics…the colours, the theme, the textures. Decorating your home is fun, but your new baby’s sanctuary is next level.

For me, this was such an important passage in the lead up to giving birth and it gave me great comfort in seeing this all come together before my baby’s arrival. However, I always ensured that I kept my family’s financial wellbeing in check at the same time.

Whether your nursery is a separate bedroom or a corner in your bedroom, there are so many great ways to create a beautiful oasis, without breaking your budget. Here are 4 tips that I have always found helpful to create a nursery whilst staying safely within my budget.

  1. Plan First – it is so tempting to jump online and start ordering everything; however, you will save yourself a lot of money and time by planning first. Start by assessing the space to see what will fit and what you really need. A mood board is a fun way to help ensure each item you purchase will work harmoniously with each other and allow more mindful purchases, as well as help you identify the mood and tone that you want to create for your little one.
  2. Budget – having a baby can be expensive and your budget can blow out if you don’t take control. I recommend making a list of the essentials first (cot, pram etc) and start allocating any saving to a separate account before you buy anything. And shop around to find the best prices. Also, hold off in buying any decorative pieces until you have the basics paid for. And research what is worth paying more for and where you can skimp. For example, a high-quality pram for me was non-negotiable, especially considering it is a high usage item, so I was happy to invest in quality.
  3. Preloved – I have always been a fan of the circular economy, and not just for the financial savings, but the benefit to our planet. And with babies growing so quickly, it is easy to find a wide range of barely used baby items at a significant discount. This is particularly helpful when trying to afford the higher quality items which may be more cost restrictive.
  4. Versatile – look to purchase versatile items for your baby that will grow with you. Not only will this save you so much money but actually save you precious space in your home. Convertible cots, car seats and highchairs are worth paying more for. And of course multifunctional items – such as change tables that offer storage solutions or nursery chairs that can be moved into other living areas once no longer needed.

As you can see, there are plenty of solutions to creating the perfect safe and practical baby nursery without having to forgo quality, style or even that touch of luxe.
